Carl Benz was born in 1844 in Karlsruhe, Germany. Despite the limited means of his family, his mother insisted upon providing him with a good technical education. Being a diligent student, Benz passed the entrance exam to study mechanical engineering at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, formerly Polytechnic College.

His father died after suffering from pneumonia when Karl was only two years old. Karl Friedrich Michael Vaillant (Karl Friedrich Benz or Carl Friedrich Benz) was born on 25 November 1844 to Johann Georg Benz and Josephine Vaillant in Karlsruhe, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. His father, Johann Georg Benz worked as a locomotive driver. Unfortunately, the two-year old Karl Benz lost his father to the pneumonia. Carl Benz was a German engineer and inventor who was responsible for many contributions to the design of modern automobiles. He developed an internal combustion gasoline engine for his 1885 version of the "horseless carriage," which was initially a three-wheeled vehicle.
